The aim of this module is to provide students with an in-depth understanding of the learning mechanisms and developmental paths during the acquisition of first and second languages. The module looks at the stages children go through as they acquire their first language(s) (i.e. mother tongue) and includes topics such as bilingualism, innateness and the environment (e.g. ‘parentese’). Concurrent with this is an exploration of how adults learn second languages and the comparative cognitive, affective and environmental factors that lead to differing developmental routes and outcomes. The module focuses chiefly on the acquisition of speaking and listening competence but also considers learning to read and write in the first language. In addition, the module will consider language acquisition in children and adults with speech and learning impairments and the intervention necessary to support these learners.
